Letters regarding the 3rd New York "Van Allen" Cavalry in the Civil War, 1889-1890.

Captain Maurice Leyden writes to Major David E. Cronin, 1889 November 18, describing in detail his Civil War experiences, particularly his capture near Petersburg, Va., on the Darby Town Road by men from Hampton's Legion, his imprisonment in Libby and Salisbury Prisons, his transfer to a prison in Danville, Va., the inhuman conditions at Danville, an attempted escape led by General Alfred N. Duffié, and the subsequent shooting of Col. William C. Raulston. Newton Hall writes to S.C. Pierce, 1890 June 2, remembering seeing Pierce on "Thunderbolt" during Wilson's raid, and regretting he cannot make a 3rd New York reunion. He recollects an incident on General John G. Foster's expedition to Goldsboro, N.C., in which the 3rd was cited by Foster for being "prompt, brave, and efficient" and another incident at the Staunton River when the men charged though they could "see the uselessness of the movement."

Duffié was born in Paris. Several claims about his early life seem to be untrue: that he graduated from the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, that he fought in the Austro-Italian War of 1859, that he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur though he wore it in several photographs, or that his father was a count. It is known that Duffié joined France's Imperial Cavalry in 1852, being assigned to the 6th Dragoon Regiment. As a member of this unit, he served during the Crimean War, seeing action at t...
